Charitable Causes
Last updated:
This guide explains charitable causes and common cause areas. Use it to understand typical definitions, describe your work clearly, and map your charity’s focus when you are planning, writing, or researching funding.
Ways to use Charitable Causes
Charitable causes describe the main areas of need that charities support. Cause areas are useful shorthand, but they are rarely neat boxes.
Many charities work across multiple causes, and the same activity can sit under different headings depending on whether you focus on the issue (for example, mental health), the population (for example, migrant and refugee), or the setting (for example, community development).
Choose a primary cause, then name the overlap
If you do lots of things, pick one primary cause area for clarity. Then name the overlap in one line; e.g. “We are a housing and homelessness charity, with a focus on mental health and addiction recovery.”
Separate the cause from the approach
A cause is what need you address. An approach is how you address it. E.g. Cause: domestic abuse, Approach: refuge, advocacy, trauma counselling, perpetrator programmes
Improve your strategy, not just your marketing
Cause areas can help you decide what to stop, where to focus, and which partnerships are essential. They also help trustees, funders, and staff understand the ‘lane’ you operate in.
Charitable cause areas & definitions
Below are common cause areas used across the UK voluntary sector. If you are writing about your work, aim for one or two cause areas, plus a short description of the people you serve.
Our list is a practical adaptation of the International Classification of Non-profit Organisations (ICNPO) to describe the activities of charities. We have further subdivided their 18 categories to aid communication.
-
Addiction and recovery
Addiction and recovery support focuses on helping people overcome substance misuse and behavioural dependencies. Charities in this area provide essential services such as counselling, rehabilitation programmes, and community support networks, aiming to empower individuals on their journey to recovery and promote healthier lifestyles. Through education and resources, these organisations play a vital role in fostering understanding and reducing the stigma surrounding addiction, ultimately aiding people in reclaiming their lives. -
Animal welfare
Animal welfare addresses the wellbeing, protection, and humane treatment of animals, both domestic and wild. Animals face threats including cruelty, neglect, abandonment, habitat loss, and exploitation. Charities work to rescue and rehome animals, prevent cruelty, advocate for stronger protections, and educate the public about responsible animal care. These organisations help ensure that animals are treated with compassion and respect, whilst supporting the communities and ecosystems that depend on healthy animal populations. -
Armed forces and emergency services
Armed forces and emergency services personnel serve their communities and country, often facing significant physical and psychological risks. Veterans, serving personnel, and emergency responders may experience mental health challenges, physical injuries, financial hardship, and difficulties transitioning to civilian life. Charities provide welfare support, mental health services, rehabilitation, employment assistance, and advocacy. These organisations help ensure that those who serve receive the recognition, care, and support they deserve. -
Arts and culture
Arts and culture enrich lives, strengthen communities, and provide opportunities for creative expression and participation. However, many people face barriers to accessing cultural activities due to cost, location, disability, or lack of confidence. These organisations help ensure that everyone can benefit from the wellbeing, social connection, and personal development that arts and culture provide. -

Business, professional associations and trades unions
Business associations, professional bodies, and trade unions represent and support the interests of their members in specific industries, professions, or trades. These membership organisations provide networking, professional development, standards and regulation, advocacy, and collective bargaining. Whilst primarily member-serving, some receive charitable funding for public benefit activities such as education, research, or advocacy work that benefits wider society. -

Faith and religion
Faith and religion are central to many people’s identities, providing meaning, community, and spiritual support. However, individuals may face barriers in practising their faith due to discrimination, isolation, or lack of accessible religious spaces. Charities support people by fostering interfaith understanding, providing pastoral care, creating welcoming places of worship, and addressing social issues through faith-based values. These organisations help ensure that everyone can explore and express their spiritual beliefs freely, whilst building bridges between different faith communities and promoting social cohesion. -
Families and carers
Families and carers play a crucial role in supporting people who require assistance due to various challenges, including illness, disability, or age-related issues. Grant-making and funding

Through strategic funding and partnership, these organisations help strengthen civil society, address funding gaps, and amplify the impact of grassroots and specialist charities working directly with communities. -
Heritage, environment and conservation

Charities work to address climate change, protect wildlife and habitats, preserve historic sites, and connect people with nature and heritage. These organisations help communities understand and value their natural and cultural assets, whilst taking action to ensure their survival in the face of environmental degradation, development pressures, and climate emergency. -

Sport and recreation
Sport and recreation support physical health, mental wellbeing, and social connection through active participation in physical activity, play, and leisure. However, many people face barriers to participation due to cost, lack of facilities, disability, or low confidence. These organisations help people contribute their time and skills to causes they care about, build social connections, and develop the capacity of communities to address local challenges and improve their own neighbourhoods.
What to do next with charitable causes
If you are reviewing your charity’s focus, charitable causes are a useful starting point. They help you name the need you exist to address, and they give you shared language for planning, funding, and communications. The aim is not to squeeze your work into a perfect label, but to be consistent and easy to understand.
Start with two sentences and keep it simple
Write two sentences you can use consistently across strategy, funding bids, and your website. Sentence 1 is the cause area you primarily work in. Sentence 2 is the change you exist to make and who you make it for.
This is not your vision or mission
This is an additional, simple, clear way to communicate what you do so that someone outside your organisation can understand it quickly.
